Artist Residency - Building Community, Constituing Memory 2024

The programme Artist Residency - Building Community, Constituing Memory 2024 promoted and organised by RAMA - Residências Artísticas de Maceira e Alfeiria, with the support of DGartes, it offers two artistic creation grants for two/two artists with ties to the Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP), born in the PALOP or descendants of citizens from PALOP countries, with no age limit, graduates of art schools or with an artistic career already developed in the different areas of the visual arts.

The Artistic Residency lasts for two months, July and August, in a rural context within the territories of the villages of Alfeiria and Maceira, Torres Vedras Municipality, in an immersive and collaborative environment, focusing on artists' empowerment and the construction of cultural memory, through sharing with peers, the intersection between artistic practices and languages, and daily contact and organized meetings with the local community, heritage, and traditions of the region.

The grants include accommodation, a food allowance of 300 euros, a working studio, a production fee of 300 euros, tutorials, curatorial support, project exhibitions, promotion, and the edition of a bilingual online catalog.

The grants do not cover travel expenses.

The artists will develop their work during the Artistic Residency at RAMA starting on 03/07/2024 and ending on 30/08/2024, with guidance from RAMA's curator Ana Anacleto, RAMA's Coordinator artist Paulo Brighenti, and invited guests, artist Cristina Ataíde, and curator Lígia Afonso.

The Artistic Residency concludes with a collective exhibition, with a single presentation on a date to be confirmed in August 2024. Projects can be installed indoors and outdoors, respectively, in the working studios, fields, and locations in the village chosen by the artists, with an inauguration and a guided tour planned.

There will be a conversation between the artists and curator Ana Anacleto open to the public, both in person and transmitted online, on a date to be confirmed in August 2024.

Through research and the creation of contemporary works of art, the scholarship programme aims to encourage community experience with a more focused attention on the region's hydrographic condition, which is a factor in agricultural development and is reflected in all human activities, from the home, to the vineyard, to other crops, as well as being present in the collective imagination of populations and their relationship with indigenous spiritual practices, rituals and customs.

In the region, water sources are mainly wells, boreholes, ponds, and watercourses, besides municipal infrastructures, with a historical context in water mines, spouts, and washhouses, thus reflecting sociological issues and daily practices that have evolved but express great richness in population development over the last century to the present day.
