LIGIA AFONSO

PhD in Art History (FCSH-UNL/FAU-USP - FCT scholarship), Master in Museology and Heritage (FCSH-UNL - FCT scholarship) researcher at the IHA (FCSH-UNL) and LIDA (ESAD.CR). Docente da ESAD.CR-IPL e da FCSH-UNL. É Coordenadora Técnico-Científica da Cátedra UNESCO em Gestão das Artes, Cultura, Cidades e Criatividade do IPL.

She is an art historian, curator and editor. She is interested in practice and research in the areas of exhibition history; historical narratives and counter-narratives; large-scale artistic phenomena such as contemporary art biennials and European capitals of culture; cultural policies; mediation, programming, production and management of cultural projects; editorial and experimental curatorship.

She dedicated her doctorate to the cultural policies of the Estado Novo period in the post-war international context, in "DIAS DE SAÍDA: O SNI e a Bienal de São Paulo na génese da internacionalização contemporânea da arte portuguesa (1951-1973)", Honorable Mention for best doctoral thesis APHA/Millennium José-Augusto França Prize 2019.

She has published texts and articles and conducted communications in scientific and institutional scopes, integrated juries of awarding, selection and support to artistic and curatorial projects. She has collaborated with several institutions and independent projects in Portugal and Brazil. She was assistant curator of the 29th Bienal de São Paulo, co-curator and editorial coordinator of the Laboratório de Curadoria da Guimarães 2012 Capital Europeia da Cultura; assistant curator of Anozero19 - Bienal de Arte Contemporânea de Coimbra; and member of the editorial team of the Rede Cultura 2027 application to become European Capital of Culture. She is preparing the first exhibition of BAC - Contemporary Art Bank (Atelier Museu Júlio Pomar/EGEAC) and the exhibitions of the Grand Prize (Ana Jotta) and Amadeo de Souza Cardoso Prize 2023.
