Carolina Kasting
WHAT SEPARATES AND UNITES, MATERIAL AND IMMATERIAL?
In residence at RAMA, from the immersion in the biome of the rural region of the villages of Maceira and Alfeiria, in the municipality of Torres Vedras, focusing on the performative language and interrelationship with the landscape and local community, territory, culture, and traditional knowledge, my goal will be to find a zone of intersection between the biome and the body/woman. To seek poetic relations between the materialities of the human bodily organism and nature, I ask myself where this zone of intersectionality is. What tensions arise between the foreign urban body of the artist and the forms, lines, textures and cycles of the local flora and landscape? Body and nature, both actors of the feminine in seasonality and transformation.
I will use practices from the workshop, such as ceramics and ancestral matriarchal weavings, hammocks, knitting, crochet and other weavings that may emerge from the regional culture where Rama is inserted. Monotype techniques, having as matrix the body and other materials collected from the biome, will also give shape to the poetics emerging from this intersection. Material and immaterial come together and separate from the dialogue that will take place with the biome and the population, with a focus on sustainability and ecology when materials from the environment and local production are used.
Kasting establishes her poetics in the symbolic representation of the body, starting from it as a political field. The body as territory, place of a feminist and decolonial speech, instrument of resignification, re-existence and deterritoriality, subject in action in the photo-
performance, inked to record the monotype, building the fabric through ancestral practices of weaving or in the performance itself. The memory, the gesture and the representation of this body, makes her place herself as an artist-subject of her narrative. Her plastic research dives into the dialogue between the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional, the flat and the volumetric, imagetic and material. Kasting uses discarded objects, organic or industrial, which assume their performative function.
